The vet visit went well. They did a small blood panel and a urinanalysis. All of her numbers came back better than they did in January when I had full panels run on everything. So her kidneys are fine and it seems Minnie is just trying to acclimate to the dry air. Lots of water equals lots of peeing. I can sympathize.
Then she had a seizure. That night. Her first one, that I know of. She doesn’t generally sleep near me in the bed but she must have sensed it coming because I woke up to her seizing against me. I jumped out of bed, flipped on the light, and she was just….seizing. I picked her up and tried to stand her up. I don’t know WHY I would do that. She fell over. Then I held her until it passed. It felt like forever. I know I held her for everybit 60 seconds. The seizure had to have been at least 2 minutes.
When it was over she was wiped, rightly so. Her front legs wouldn’t work underneath her so she just laid there. There was slobber everywhere. I don’t know how she generated that much saliva. She finally was able to stand up and came around a bit, so I took her out. Once outside, she seemed fine. We came back in and went back to sleep.
She slept almost the entirety of the next day. Her eating got worse than it had been…but it’s getting better. I had already started feeding her real meat and home made vegetable mixtures. Eggs too.
I called the vet in the morning, as well as contacted my vet in Richmond. Both agreed that at this point we need to wait and watch, to establish a pattern, if there is one. Will she ever have another one? If so, how often, how long will they be, how will she react? Then we can gauge the need for anticonvulsants.
Seems there are four things this could be; epilepsy (ruled out due to her age), her blood sugar had dropped (hoping for this one), a brain tumor (cancerous or benign), or cancer elsewhere that has spread to the brain. I genuinely believe it was a fluke blood sugar drop. No seizures since and I am optimistic that this one was an anomaly.
Again, I want to thank everyone who has continued to ask about and show concern for Minnie. She has lots of people that love her, vets in two states and a tenacious mama all looking out for her!!
